Top 10 Books I Want To Read In 2018

So today I wanted to share with you the top 10 books I realy want to get to in 2018. I know you're going to look at this post and say " but Ali I thought you weren't going to post any TBR's this year." I'm not, these are just a list of books that I would love to get to this year. It doesn't mean I'm actually going to read them, I'm going to do my best though because they are books I'm dying to read. I am cheating a little with one of the choices, mainly beacause it's a box set lol. (And as you're reading this I've already read two of the books in the set!) So without further ado, let's do this!

These are in no certain order, but there is one on here that scares the crap out of me mainly because of it's size. It's the reason I haven't read it yet. You'll know exactly which one I'm talking about as soon as you see it!

1. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black - I just got this book and I can't wait to read it! More than likely I'm going to read in it Feburary! That's exactly how excited I am about it. I just hope it exceeds the hype.

2. A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab - Now I have read this one before, but I want to finish the series so I'm going to be doing a re-read of this one so I can get back into the world and remember all the different London's!

3. The Giver Quartet by Lois Lowry - Okay this is the book/books I'm cheating with on this list. I've already read The Giver and Gathering Blue this month and I'm going to try to finish The Messenger by the end of Jan. That's the reason I'm counting this as one! I love this series so far but I really need to know how it's all going to connect!

4. The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon - This book series has me so intregued!  I can't wait to start this one, but it's rather large. (not the one that I was talking about earlier) I hope to be able to tackle this one this year, plus I already have the second book in the series waiting as well.

5. Everless by Sara Holland - Now this book has had me going crazy over the cover and the plot since I first heard about it. I got my copy from Amazon the other day and I want to dive right in so bad. I'm just worried about the hype. So I might wait a few months till the hype dies down a bit before I start it. Though it sounds amazing!

6. Half Bad by Sally Green - Now this series has been on my shelf for awhile now and I think it's time to finally read it. Everyone keeps telling me to pick it up, so it's time. I've honestly heard nothing but great stuff about this book.

7. And I Darken by Kiersten White - Another book that's been on my shelf since last year and I really really want to get to it this year. I love this authors writing style and I can't wait to dive right in.  I don't even have a good reason why I haven't read this one yet, I even have the next book in the saga!

8. Red Rising by Pierce Brown - Again I have heard nothing but amazing things about this book and I have no reason for why I haven't read it yet. I think it's time to pick this one up right away!

9. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - Yep you guessed it, this is the one that scares the crap out of me because of it's sheer size. Have you seen how many pages are in this book? 850 Pages! I have it on audio as well and it's over 32 hours long. I will get to this book this year though. This is one of my goals, I love this show so much, I just know I'm going to love the book even more.

10. Snow like Ashes by Sara Raasch - I have this whole series just sitting on my shelf and I want to get to the whole series this year, but if I can't I want to at least start it. This is another series I can't wait to jump into.

Like I said above, this isn't really a TBR post, it's just a list of books that I would really love to get to this year. The main goal this year is to bring the joy back into reading for me and if I get to these then that's awesome, if not then there is always next year. Though some of these I know I will read!

Have you read any of these books? What are your thoughts and what are a few books that you're dying to read this year? Let me know in the comments below.

Book Blitz: Asleep From Day by Margarita Montimore

Contemporary/General Fiction

Astrid can’t remember the best day of her life: yesterday.

A traumatic car accident erases Astrid’s memories of September 9th, the day she spent with an oddly charming stranger named Theo. Ever since, she’s been haunted by surreal dreams and an urgent sense that she’s forgotten something important. One night, she gets a mysterious call from Oliver, who knows more about her than he should and claims he can help her remember. She accepts his help, even as she questions his motives and fights a strange attraction to him.

In order to find Theo and piece together that lost day in September, Astrid must navigate a maze of eccentric Boston nightlife, from the seedy corners of Chinatown to a drug-fueled Alice-in-Wonderland-themed party to a club where everyone dresses like the dead. In between headaches and nightmares, she struggles to differentiate between memory, fantasy, and reality, and starts to wonder if Theo really exists. Eventually, she’ll need to choose between continuing her search for him or following her growing feelings for Oliver. Astrid might go to extreme lengths to find what she’s lost . . . or might lose even more in her pursuit to remember (like her sanity).

“A compelling and original take on the classic amnesia tale . . . The narrative bursts with detailed, vivid characters . . . The dialogue is expertly crafted.” – The BookLife Prize

“Simply riveting from start to finish... a captivating, literary piece that winds a path somewhere between mystery, romance, and psychological thriller.” – D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Excerpt

What’s the last thing you remember?

A rumble, a static rush, the world on a dimmer switch.

Outside, everything was gray.

But inside, a galaxy of color and light. Fireflies behind my eyes, neon in my bones. A nerve net of bioluminescence.

Radiant with hope. Glorious.

Do you know where you are?

In the heart of a storm. Give me lightning. Give me the flood. I’ve bled the sky of pigment, devoured its clouds. They remain like honey on my tongue, crystalized with promise. Nothing was ever sweeter.

What happened?

Something incredible.

Something terrible.

No more color. Fade to grey.

I’ve been robbed of this elation.

Stay with me.

---

I have the weirdest taste in my mouth. Metallic, like I’ve been sucking on pennies, and spicy—no, not spicy. Stinging. Blood. What the—? I move my tongue and feel tiny pebbles. They’re sharp, cutting my gums and the insides of my cheeks. Not pebbles. Teeth? No. Glass.

I turn to spit out pieces of broken glass, but there’s something around my neck and I can’t move it. Okay, don’t panic. I push the glass out of my mouth with the tip of my tongue and pieces roll down my chin on a trail of saliva and blood. Now let’s turn on a light in here.

I open my eyes. Huh.

What is this place? There are shelves of equipment, strange monitors, dials, wires. Some kind of . . . storage room? The image blurs and wobbles. If my head is a handheld camera, whoever’s operating it has a serious case of the shakes. I can’t get a steady picture and I have no idea what this place is.

Have I been kidnapped?

That thought should trigger some modicum of fear. But it’s like I’m trapped in a block of ice and fear is on the other side of it. I can barely muster any curiosity to figure out where I am. The rest of it—how I got here, if I’m safe, hurt, etc.—will have to wait.

So let’s see. The room is tiny, and moving, and noisy. There are beeps, the hiss and tinny chatter of a walkie-talkie, the looped bellow of a siren.

Seriously, where am I?

Nowhere good, a black whisper warns, and a fog in my mind parts, clearing a path for fear, the belated guest.

The image finally snaps into focus and it registers: an ambulance.

Why the fuck am I in an ambulance?

I sit up with a—nope, I can only lift my head maybe an inch.

Why aren’t you panicking more?

Because it’s getting foggy inside my head again and blurry outside of it. I could really use a nap. It’s so chilly in here. And bright. Might as well close my eyes and deal with this in the morning. Ah, the dark is much better.

Hang on. Let’s get some questions answered first, maybe make sure I’m not missing any limbs. I try to sit up again and a hand on my shoulder prevents me from rising any further. No, it’s not just the hand. I’m strapped in.

“Nice to see you coming around, but don’t try to sit up. My name is Leo and I’m a paramedic. Do you know today’s date?”

I squint but can’t make out the face above me.

“September ninth, 1999,” I mumble.

“It’s actually September tenth,” he corrects me. Close enough.

“What happened? Am I hurt?” Of course you’re hurt, genius. I doubt you’re tied to a gurney, with a mouthful of glass, just joyriding in an ambulance.

“It’s going to be okay, Astrid, we’re almost at the hospital.”

How does this guy know my name? Why am I going to the hospital? Because that’s usually the drop-off destination of ambulances. Try to keep up here. What happened to me?

My head is so damn heavy. Back down it goes, more blood, more spit trickling out of the corners of my mouth. I form words but can’t speak them. I manage a garbled whisper, but it’s drowned out by sirens, rattling noises, and the tapping of heavy rain on the ambulance roof.

I need to take stock. I’m mostly immobile, but am I paralyzed? I try to wiggle the toes. Okay, those work fine. Fingers? The ones on the left hand move then seize up in pain. Blinded? Obviously not, but my vision is still fuzzy at the edges. Obviously, I can’t move my head much, but I shouldn’t anyway, in case I have a concussion. Or worse. Go away, black whisper, I don’t need you scaring the shit out of me right now.

Back to my self-assessment. Do I feel pain anywhere else in my body? Now that I mention it, hell yes. Where? Everywhere, especially my left side.

Why can’t I remember how this happened? I keep asking the paramedic, but he won’t tell me. Why won’t he answer me?

Oh yeah, because he can’t actually hear me. Because my lips are barely moving and no sound is coming out.

It’s an effort to form any more words or keep my eyes open. Is there a cold, heavy blanket over me? Uh-oh, those blurry edges are going dark. It’s like someone pushed me into a deep well and I’m falling in slow motion.

“Try to stay awake, Astrid.”

Fingers snap in front of my face.

Cut it out, ambulance man. You’re messing up my nap. It’s so much nicer with my eyes closed. All you do is boss me around with “Don’t sit up” this and “Stay awake” that. The darkness is quiet and doesn’t make annoying demands.

“Astrid. Astrid!”

His voice is like a megaphone in my ear. Where is your mute button, ambulance man?

I think I found it. It’s here, further down in the dark.

I hear two voices, growing fainter as they speak.

“She’s out again, but vitals are stable.”

I’m not out, yet, ambulance man. Give a girl a break, would ya? It’s not my fault I have anvils on my eyelids. Besides, the light in here is too bright. And you are too loud. But I can still hear you fine . . . Mostly . . . Kind of . . .

“You’d think people would know not to drive like assholes in this kind of rain.”

“What is this, third one today?”

“Fourth. You hear about the wreck by the BQE? Five cars and a motorcycle. Two fatalities.”

“This one got lucky.”

“So to speak.”

“So to speak.”

“Want to get breakfast after this?”

“It’s lunchtime.”

“So? I want breakfast. Couldn’t you go for some French toast or pancakes?”

“Maybe eggs. Some strong coffee, bacon . . .”

“Extra bacon.”

How about taking my order, ambulance man? I’ll have—

Darkness.

Week at a Glance

Alright so this week has been a bit crazy for me, with the weather around here and the kids being off school on Friday it was nuts. I also ended up getting sick this week, which just made it all worse. Anyway, I did have a great reading week. I read two books this week! These two books are also for the same series so I'm working on one of my goals for the year of finishing some of the series that I own.

What I Read This Week

I read both of these for Bout of Books Read-A-thon which actually ends today.  Plus these two books became my first two reads of the year.

I bought the whole box set on Amazon right after Christmas and I plan to read the whole series ASAP! I'm on book three now and loving it so far.

Ali Talks: My Audio Book Queue

Today if you didn't figure it out by the title of this post we are going to be talking about my Audio book queue. Yep my queue is starting to become rather large, due to my subscription to Audible. I love Audible and it's a great place to get audio books. (No this post isn't a paid promotion from them, I just love their site.) So let's talk about what's in my Audio book queue. I'm hoping making this post will help me be more accountable for my audio book buying. I have so many to listen to right now!

So like I said my audio book queue is starting to get out of hand and I really need to start listening to more audio books. Below is a list of the books waiting for me to start. I'm thinking in the comments below, tell me a few audio books that are on your list and maybe what I should listen to next. Maybe if you're like me I can help you choose as well.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown - I just got this one this past month. It's a book that I've been wanting to read and just haven't had the chance to.

The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater - I loved the first book in this series and bought this one right away, but haven't had the chance to get back to the series. This year I would like to finish the whole series.

American Drifter by Heather Graham and Chad Michael Murray - Yep that's the guy from One Tree Hill! OMG I was told this book was amazing and went right away to get it from Audible. It's also narrated by him!

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon - This is another book that's been sitting on my bookshelf and audio shelf for awhile! I think it's the size of the book that's a bit daunting to me.

A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess - A friend told me about this one and I just haven't had the chance to start it.

The Book Jumper by Mechthild Glaser - Now this is a book that I would love to start right now and might. It's been on my list since it first came out and I was super excited about the plot.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer - Another book that's been on here since it came out. Seems to be a reoccurring thing lol.

Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart - I loved We Were Liars by this author and had to have this one as well. Just haven't started listening to it yet.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor - This is another one that I heard of from a friend.

Landline by Rainbow Rowell - I have no excuse for why I haven't listened to this one yet. I love this author and she's seriously one of my always buy authors.

Ruins by Dan Wells - This is another series that I want to finish this year. I loved the first two books and can't wait to start this one.

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell - This is a book that I wanted so badly to listen to and got it, but never got to it.

When It's Real by Erin Watt - This is another author that I buy every time she has a new book. This is actually two authors I just found this out this year. But their writing style is fantastic and I had to have this one.

The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron -  This is an actual book that's been on my shelf for awhile, so I thought maybe getting the audio would help, it hasn't so far!

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan - This is another series that I've been wanting to finish and planned on doing so last year, it just didn't happen.

Trickery by Jane Washington - This was a book that I heard about from Booktube and got it but never thought about it again. Which is really sad because it sounds really good.

Royally Screwed by Emma Chase - This is an adult book that I really want to get to this year, seeing as one of my goals is to read more adult.

SEAL's Promise by Sharon Hamilton - This is a audiobook that I got for review and I really need to start this one soon.

A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab - Now I have the other two books in this series in hardback. I bought them at her book signing last year and they didn't have this one in stock. I had planned to marathon them so I went ahead and got the audio. I really need to get to this series. Everyone keeps telling me how amazing it really is.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston - Now with this book, I tried to actually read it on Ebook and just didn't get into it. SO I thought I'd try it in audio, but haven't done so yet.

The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer - Again this is a an author that I will always buy their books. This is an adult book and I figured I would love it as well. I haven't listened to it mainly because I was told I wasn't really going to like it. Though I still want to give it a shot.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon - Now this is a book that I want to get to right now. I just watched the movie, (yep I watched the movie before reading the book) but I loved the movie! Hopefully the book is even better.

Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth - As you all know there was some controversy surrounding this book. I was gifted this one and still need to listen to it.

Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill - Another book I was excited to listen to but haven't gotten the chance.

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare - I know don't shoot me! I finished the first on audio and wanted to continue but haven't had the chance.

Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick - Now this series is one that I love! I was missing this copy, but now I have it, just can't decide which way I'm going to read it.

Three Dark Crowns by Kendar Blake - This book was so hyped that I got it but didn't want to get effected by the hype. So I didn't listen right away.

The Crowns Game by Evelyn Skye - This goes for this book as well, it was so hyped that I didn't want to be effected by it. I hate when that happens.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - Okay I confess the reason I haven't listened to this one is because of it's sheer size. I really want to get over that this year and either listen or read this one. I love the show so much.

Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken - Another series I want to finish this year.

Covet by J.R. Ward - This is another author that I automatically buy her books. This is the start of a different series and I really want to read this one.

Black Dagger Brotherhood 7-10 by J. R. Ward - Yep again automatically buy and I love love love this series. I stopped because I needed a little break from the series, but I want to pick it back up again like now!

Legend by Marie Lu - Now I have this book in print also, but can't decide if I want to listen or read.

The Essence by Kimberly Derting - Another series I want to finish this year. The Pledge was one of my favorite books and I want to dive back into the series so badly.

The Coldest Girl In Coldtown by Holly Black - Another book that's been sitting there and I have it in print as well.

Enchanted by Alethea Kontis - Another book I have in print and audio.

Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris - I so wanted to read this book when it came out, but the hype was just too big.

Scarlet by Marissa Meyer - Alright don't murder me for this one, but I didn't like Cinder that much and was told this one was so much better. I'm just not sure about this one. I also have it in print.

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White - I love this authors writing and it's another series that I want to get to this year.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor - I have tried a few times to read this and wanted to try audio, hoping it will help.

I have no idea where to start on this list. Is there any of your favorites on here? If so tell me which ones. Also I think I'm going to go on a audiobook buying ban until I at least finish half of these! What do you all think?  Think I might update this post as I go along as well, mark them off as I finish them.
