Black swirling holes churning madly in the center of every corpse. This is how eighteen-year-old Chelsan Derée sees the deceased. Her ability to connect to the black spinning holes allows her to control every dead thing within a four-mile radius.

But that's the least of her problems. It's 2320 and Chelsan Derée has to survive another year of high school, which for her is pure and utter torture, mainly due to the fact that her schoolmate Jill Forester's favorite activity is making Chelsan's life a living hell. If that isn't enough, Chelsan's impossible crush on Ryan Vaughn makes her brain do somersaults on a regular basis, especially since she is positive he doesn't know she exists. And being eighteen Chelsan has to deal with the pressure of whether or not she should take a little pill called Age-pro, which cures aging, making the world eighteen forever and highly over-populated.

When Chelsan's mother, Janet, is brutally killed, along with everyone else in her trailer park, Chelsan finds out that she was the intended target. Chelsan must use her power to raise and control the dead to save herself, protect her friends and take down the man responsible for murdering her mother.

Review:

When I first agreed to read/review Riser by Becca C. Smith for this tour, I was a bit skeptical, I had heard some drama about this book and wasn't sure it would be for me.  I am so glad I didn't listen to what everyone else said and just took the leap.  I loved this book!

In this incredibly written book Becca C. Smith brings us a beautiful world to picture in out heads as we read.

Living forever...hmm that was something that I really never thought about, even with all the books about vampires these days I just didn't think about it. It can be a crazy thought process though, what would you do if you could live forever and what would happen if they tried to control who actually got to live forever and who had to end up dying?  Its a lot to think about.

I really enjoyed getting to read the first account of what happens in this story as well.  The main character that I ended up really getting attached to, tells us this story in her own way.  The way she tells her story seems so real as if she was really a teenager standing right in front of you telling you the story to your face.

Chelsan, can control the dead.  I mean really control them, like lift your right arm and the dead person does it.  Its really creepy in a cool and different way.  Which is another reason I think I really loved it.  It is so different from all the other things I've read lately.  Our main character goes through so much in this book though and it makes you root for her even more.

Riser is a must read if you haven't already.  If your looking for something different and where the writing matches the way a teenager would actually tell a story then this book is for you.  Becca C. Smith is now on my favorite author list!
