First off I want to say Thank you so much Kimberly S. Lin for doing this guest post and for letting me be part of your amazing tour. Also want to thank Samantha Robey over at Chicklitplus for letting me a tour host as well. Thanks ladies!!!! Now lets get to this great guest post.
Kimberly is the amazing author of Recession Proof and I asked her to do a post about What she thought made a great book and this is what she had to say!
I think there are three very important things to make a great book.
For me they are:
1) Suspense: I think that’s what all page-turning novels have in common and I personally think it’s so important to create and build tension in every chapter. I think when you do that, it gets and keeps the reader engaged. When I first started writing Recession Proof, I knew that one of my goals was to create a hook after every chapter. I really wanted to be like Pringles chips- “one pop and you can’t stop.” I think that’s why a lot of my readers say they can’t put the book down.
2) Characters you can relate to: You could be writing about space-age mutants that wear pink dresses and have tea at 3pm every Sunday but if I, as the reader, can’t relate to them then I’m not really emotionally involved. I think to really connect to a story the reader needs to connect with the characters. This was also one of my goals- so far people have told me that it’s been like reading a page out of their own diaries, which is amazing and humbling to hear.
3) Humor: In the same way I like a man that can make me laugh, I love when a character in a book makes me laugh out loud. I know for me it’s a marker of a good book when I’m sitting on an airplane and people are sleeping next to me but I can’t help but laugh even if it wakes them up. For me my favorite chapter in Recession Proof is chapter three. It makes me laugh every single time. I also love Sophie’s character in the book. She just reminds me of my best friend who always has my sides splitting.
Thanks again for writing this great guest post!!! I hope you all will check out her fantastic book Recession Proof and make sure you head over and read the great review I posted for her book as well.
